I'd like to read NMEA data from Garmin Oregon 450 via USB by Windows or Linux PC. All attempts failed.
I tested all connection modes. Only 'Spanner' mode - allows setting baud rate. asks for connection as mass storage or device. In all other mode (serial, NMEA etc) Oregon is only recognized as mass storage. In no case Windows recognizs a device connected via virtual serial interface.
All my searches on Internet failed as well. According to this Garmin Oregon only knows two modes: USB mass storage or proprietary non supported Spanner mode - but no NMEA. My question: did anyone successfully read NMEA data from Oregon to PC via serial/USB interface? Thanks for help! You need to have your Oregon in Spanner mode and you need to say No when asked whether to enter mass storage mode when you connect it to a PC.
But that, by itself, is not enough. You need software, on the PC, to read data via the USB interface and send that to a virtual COM port. Garmin created a free program called a very long time ago but it won't work on Windows Vista or above. The other (paid) software I know and have used before is. I have successfully use Spanner and GPSGate in the past but frankly I just don't need to use NMEA. GpsGate is available for Windows 7/Vista/XP/2k/NT/ME/98, Windows Mobile (with touch screen), Pocket PC, Windows CE.NET I don't know of a Linux solution but then I haven't looked. I read that GPSGate now operates in a free mode (I actually have a license for it).

As for the 'text' and 'serial' modes of the Oregon I don't know since it has no serial port only USB. On my 76CSx, which does have a real serial port, the 'text' and 'NMEA' modes operate as expected. The bottom line is that the Oregon can be used as a 'GPS mouse' as I've done it-at least with Windows machines. As with most things Linux you're on you're own. FYI I purchased this cable and currently have it plugged into my Oregon 450. I have the cable wired into a PC with a real serial port. The PC is running HyperTerminal to receive any serial data.
With the Oregon 450 in NMEA In/Out mode I get NMEA sentences (the Oregon allows the user to turn certain types on/off). In Text Out mode I get a line of text (date/time and other data) once per second. In mode I can communicate with the Oregon using MapSource (BaseCamp does not support serial interlaces). Thanks for giving the overview. Internally Oregon seems to have a serial interface. The data stream is passed through RS232- USB converter. If I understand correctly you connect the Oregon USB-Output to your (physical) PC-RS232 interface via USB-RS232 converter cable.
Does Oregon allow to specify data rate (on my device this menu is available only in spanner mode)? According to your information Oregon transmits data (I had some doubts on his because no setup menu is shown).
Theoretically it should be possible to connect Oregon to PC via USB and collect data via a virtual PC RS232 interface. So far my tests failed with Oregon (but were succesfull with other RS232/USB devices). Which baud rate to you use? 8 bit data size?

GPSmap 64 GARMIN GPSmap 64 series The models of the GPSmap 64 series support the Russian GLONASS satellites Rugged hand held GPS devices with large color display, integrated base map, auto-routing, slot for uSD memory card and USB interface. The GPSmap 64s and 64st are additionally equipped with an electronic compass, a barometrical altimeter, a connector for an external antenna and they support wireless communication with compatible devices. The GPSmap 64st comes furthermore with a pre-installed topographic map of Europe. All models support the US GPS and the Russian GLONASS satellites. The devices of the GARMIN GPSmap 64 series are very easy to use thanks to their rocker key and user friendly graphical interface. They consume little power, support multiple languages and have an integrated base map. These devices can not only receive the signals of the US GPS satellites, but also those of the Russian GLONASS satellites.
This provides improved accuracy of the position indication, particularly under difficult conditions such as in cities with tall buildings, in narrow valleys, near steep cliffs and in dens forests. This is especially helpful when searching for geocaches. All models come with a pre-installed world-wide base map.
They provide 4 GB rsp. 5 GB free built-in memory to store even more detailed information, such as local roads, restaurants, public buildings and other points of interest. All models are equipped with an USB interface, can receive data from an optional heart rate monitor and/or an optional speed/cadence sensor and are equipped with a slot for an optional uSD memory card in the battery compartment. The GPSmap 64s and GPSmap 64st are both equipped with a built-in electronic compass, a barometrical altimeter, a connector for an external antenna and they can exchange data wireless with compatible devices. Additionally, the GPSmap 64st comes with a pre-installed topographic map of Europe.
